Apps: Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

If you use the Accelerated Reader program in your classroom, you need to download this app. I have been in a number of classrooms that constantly have a list of student names on the board who are waiting to take an Accelerated Reader test. By downloading this app, you are providing one more platform for students to use to take tests, thus shortening the time the names are on the board.

The Accelerated Reader app works much like the computerized program. It allows students to log into their account, search for book titles, and take quizzes. The Recorded Voice Quizzes are also supported on this app. Students simply tap the answers on the screen, which eliminates mistakes due to inadvertent mouse clicks! The fact that the app operates on an iPad means that the quiz can come to the student instead of the student going to the computer to take the quiz. This feature makes it much easier to have students take quizzes during small reading groups. In addition, it allows the teacher to assist the student while still fully supervising the rest of the class instead of the teacher being forced to monitor a test with his or her back to the class. Best of all, this app is FREE!

The only downfall I have found while using this app is that without an Apple printer, the TOPS Report does not print. However, the student still receives credit for taking the quiz and performance can be viewed by the teacher through class reports.

As with any Accelerated Reader quiz, the app requires that the school have an existing account with Accelerated Reader, and depending on your school's settings, quizzes may only be taken when at school.

Below are some screen shots of the program courtesy of Apple:
